Green Tea Restaurant |
|
Green Tea Restaurant is no longer new, but it’s still as huge a success as it was when it first opened. It’s not uncommon for people to spend two hours queued up to try their food. Is it that good? Well, Green Tea recently just opened up in Beijing, expanding the brand, and we’ve heard it’s already been visited by movie stars like Faye Wong and Liu Jialing.Simply put, Green Tea is awesome. It’s no French Chalet by any means. No jacket is required, and it’s too much like a country fair for a romantic date, but when anyone wants the Hangzhou dining experience, Green Tea is it, especially in summer. They’ve got draught beer, fresh fruit juices (get at least one glass of the lemon with local grapefruit juice), and a plethora of desserts. Our peanut smoothie made us all wish were a little bigger so we could eat more. This review is way too short to start going into the food, but we have to mention the mandatory barbeque pork and chicken. The Green Tea Signature Pot Rice Soup is unique. The classic Glass Noodles Fried with Cabbage and the Cabbage Stir-Fry in Lingnan Bean Sauce are both superb...

Zao Feng Nian Jian, Manlong Branch |
|
There are a lot of places in Hangzhou that are trying really hard to look authentic without being too rough around the edges. Most of these places fail to pull it off. The spot we visited this time was Zao Feng Nian Jian. It's a mouthful of a name, but one that will leave a lasting impression on those who want to enjoy a dose of authenticity, without regretting it later. The new location, which is based on the already successful and respected 3-year old original, is filled with warmth and casual comfort. The generous use of unfinished wood and intelligent application of natural lighting that casts mysterious shadows everywhere heightens the sense that you've found something worth investigating further. As our food arrived, we noticed that...

Blue Village Lanquan Gardens Restaurant |
The MORE crew was ready for something new as we pulled up to Lanquan's greenery, and saw a lot of blue all around us. There were blue awnings, blue parasols over the outdoor tables, and tasteful blue accents everywhere else. It was a stark contrast to the perpetually haze-laden sky above, with a pleasing effect that boded well as we took our seats. A moment of silence ensued, as we looked around and took in the sights. Someone with an eye for design and a definite vision designed this place, we noted, as our gaze fell over the quaint stone walkways to the colorful floral arrangements laid out on their vast lawn.
When the food started showing up, however, our imaginations were interrupted by the reality of a restaurant that has good intentions, but lacks experience to back up its dreamy mission. The Anhui-born chef was supposedly trained by a native Greek in the ways of Mediterranean cuisine...
