01 The Lalu Nanjing 南京涵碧楼
If there is a name that can stir your emotions, it is The Lalu (涵碧楼). In 1901, Mr. Ito built a small wooden cabin on the Lalu Peninsula for vacation use at Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan and called it “The Lalu". For hundreds of years, with strict entrance control, only senior governmental officials, generals, prime ministers, and emperors were allowed into The Lalu. Therefore, a myth was created about this building.
However, how did The Lalu come about?
In 1949, when the Chinese Nationalist Government retreated to Taiwan, The Lalu became President Chiang Kai-Shek’s hostel, used primarily for vacation use and to entertain foreign head of states.
The new Lalu Hotel in Nanjing, modelled on one of Chiang Kai-shek’s favorite hotels, Taiwan’s Lalu Sun Moon Lake Hotel, aims to become a landmark in the booming Yangtze River Delta region. It is the second Lalu hotel in mainland China, the first was in Qingdao.
The Lalu has two restaurants: Soalian Restaurant and Ho Jia 9. Soalian is a Chinese restaurant that features Huaiyang cuisine but also presents the essence of Taiwanese cuisine, adhering to the charm of Sun Moon Lake and their claypot duck is the most admired dish in the Republic of China. Family Chiang’s private banquet menu is the highlight of the restaurant. From Braised Codfish with Bean Curd to Cixi's favorite Beijing Palace Silver Roll, from Braised Bullfrog Legs to Urn-Roasted Chicken, the talented culinary team uses unique techniques to allow diners to experience the fascination of Soalian. The seven themed private rooms meet the needs for an undisturbed space during private gatherings.
Ho Jia 9 is an All-Day-Dining restaurant. A blend of Chinese and Western buffet with international delicacies, traditional delicacies, modern dishes, Taiwanese snacks and tempting desserts. Enjoy the visual feast and satisfy your taste buds in a quiet and comfortable dining environment with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. We can't help but praise, "Ho Jia" (Taiwanese slang for yummy)!
And make sure you don’t miss their “Little Bee” afternoon tea in the morning glory field. Light up the candle and enjoy the last light of sunset amidst the fragrance of flowers. The “Little Bee” afternoon tea set is well mixed with the savory and the sweet: Cream Cheese with Smoked Salmon Sandwich, Scone with Lemon Honey and Cream are great choices. It requires reservations one day in advance.
When you come back to the lobby, if you observed carefully, the grand chandelier in the Main Lobby transforms itself into the misty bamboo forests surrounding Nanjing, and the pattern of the Tea Bar carpet becomes that of the yuhua stone found around the Yangtze River. The design of each space holds within itself a subtle memento of the place upon which it was built, and it is up to the visitors’ attentive eye to discover it. The Celadon Ou music which was playing in the lobby is something rare to hear, “Ou Music” short for Yue kiln Celadon porcelain music and is also known as “water bowl” music. It represents a form of artistic expression and performance skill using the “Yue Kiln Ou bowl” as the main musical instrument. The musical instruments and utensils are made from ceramic clay and if you are interested, they will let you try playing on it.

02 Travel Houselet in Huizhou 大旅小舍
Huizhou (徽州) is the old name for the region of southeastern Anhui (a portmanteau of Anqing and Huizhou) and northern Jiangxi. Within 40 minutes driving away from the famous Yellow Mountain, Huizhou has some well-preserved villages from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368 – 1911). It developed into a mercantile powerhouse in the 13th century, and with that developed a unique culture.
With the beautiful nature and significant architecture, a lot of guesthouses opened here in the past couple of years. Apart from those big names such as Banyan Tree, Crown Plaza and Imperial Guard, there are quite a few independent guesthouses that stand out with their own character. Travel Houselet is one of them.
Travel Houselet is nestled in Xixi’nan Village, which is an ancient village of Huizhou with 1,200 years of history. After the chaos of war, only approximately 10 Ming Dynasty buildings and 100 Qing Dynasty houses are still completely preserved in this village till today. Xixi’nan Village has an elegant and quiet environment. Many painters and writers came here to make their creations. Some of them stayed, bought the old houses and renovated it. The transportation is very convenient, only 4 kilometers away from Huangshan North Railway Station.
Travel Houselet covers 2,500 square meters. It has an outdoor swimming pool, bathing pool, garden, bar, Café and restaurant. The restaurant serves authentic Huizhou dishes paired with imported wine. Every once a while, they will bring out their signature roasted whole lamb.
Rooms, bedding and toiletries are all five star hotel’s standard, allowing you to have sweet dreams in the wilderness of the mountains.
Designed around the bāguà, the eight trigrams of the I-Ching, which match up with the eight surrounding hills, Chengkan is a highly photogenic village that hasn't yet been completely restored, with arched bridges over waterways cloaked with lilies. Buildings are in various states of repair and visitors are far fewer than at villages more firmly on the tourist map. An S-shaped stream snakes through the middle, carving the symbol for yin and yang deep through the heart of the village. Compared to Xidi or Hongcun, Chengkan remains comparatively underdeveloped and is not as well known, but this is a pristine village with an idyllic atmosphere. When you walk into the village, it's a bit like stepping into a maze, with its three main streets and 99 lanes criss-crossing the settlement. Chengkan is 12 kilometers away from Travel Houselet, about 15 minutes driving.
Fengyanglin Wetland Park
This xanadu is walking distance from the guesthouse. Along the river, there are thick and dense forests, green and lush, and there are large maple forests growing along the river bank. This is Fengyanglin, a spot as picturesque as its name. The village hidden behind this thick green forest is quiet and peaceful. During the four kilometers long walk, it seems as if you have inadvertently entered a fairytale world.
Huangshan Scenic Area is 33 kilometers away, about 30 minutes driving.
Xin’an River is 40 kilometers away, about 40 minutes driving.
Tangyue Archways is 10 kilometers away, about 10 minutes driving.
Hongcun is 50 kilometers away, about 50 minutes driving.

Your skin is the largest organ that you have in your body and it is one that has multiple uses. It not only covers and protects everything inside your body, but it also helps your body stay at just the right temperature and allows you to have the sense of touch. Your skin, however, is often the one organ that we do not look after-especially during this time of year.
The winter and spring are particularly vulnerable seasons for your skin. The winter in particular can play a huge role in the way your skin reacts. This is especially the case in the northern parts of China where the weather is harsh, cold, dry, and dusty. People with sensitive or dry skin are particularly prone to problems during the winter season.
A common condition during the winter season and one that we treat often is dry, itchy skin. If you are suffering from this condition it is often easily treated, but remember to see your dermatologist or doctor straight away to be properly diagnosed.
By following the tips below, you will be able to beat dry itchy skin before it even starts this winter.
Tips to help you get your skin through the winter season
Do not take more than one shower/bath a day
Over washing removes the natural lubricant that skin produces and makes skin dry and flaky.
Do not shower/bathe for more than 10 minutes
The longer you stay in the water, the drier your skin will get.
Do not shower/bathe in hot water
Heat increases the rate that water evaporates from your skin leaving it dry. Luke warm water is a better choice.
Avoid saunas and steam baths
Like hot showers, they increase the rate that water evaporates from your skin leaving it dry.
Use a mild formula soap or shower gel and don't exfoliate
Apply moisturizing cream right after you shower/bathe while your skin is still damp
Moisturizers lock water into your skin but do not help add water so the best time to apply them is straight after your body has been in contact with water. For very dry weather, a thin moisturizer that is applied after a shower is not enough; in this circumstance, some thicker and greasier creams will do a better job.
Avoid wearing nylon or woolen clothing because these materials can irritate your skin
Loose fitting undergarments made out of 100% cotton are best when your skin is dry.
Air-conditioners, over-heated rooms, and windy weather all make the environment dry, which in turn can make your skin dry
To combat this, put some plants, fish-tanks, or humidifiers in your office and home.
Apply some extra protection if you have to go out on a windy day
The sun is not as hot or bright in winter
however, if you are outdoors for long periods of time, your skin can still get sunburned, particularly in the snow
Be sure to apply sunscreen in these cases.
Avoid spicy food as it can make your skin dry and itchy
Drink lots of water and limit your intake of alcohol

Don’t have motivation to go workout? Tired of running alone? Bored of lifting all those weights in the gym? And got too many injuries from CrossFit? Here comes boxing to shake up your work-out routine!
Benefits of Boxing
Boxing is a truly fantastic sport and it isn’t just for those giant beasts of men that you see on television. Boxing is a sport that everybody can participate in and that makes a huge difference. Of course, you don’t actually have to step in the ring in the form of competitive boxing. We realize that not everybody wants to fight other people for fun, not to mention that taking a few shots to the noggin can definitely hurt your brain, but you can always box for fun and you can definitely engage in all of the training that comes with it.
There's a reason why boxing is the workout of choice for so many celebs and models. Not only is fighting a strength and cardio workout in one, it's the best way to get in tune with your inner badass.
The boxing workout is great for fat loss. Almost every boxing exercise will make you sweat. No matter if you're doing heavy bag work, mitt work, jumping rope, sparring, push-ups or even shadowboxing, you're going to burn calories. You can lose 3-4 pounds in a single workout if it's intense enough. The main physical benefit beginner boxers will see is cardiovascular since boxing improves your resting heart rate and muscular endurance. That lowered resting heart rate and increased stamina can give you an edge in your other workouts.
With a potential burn rate of 13 calories a minute, boxing goes head-to-head with other types of cardio like running and cycling. Plan to punch away anywhere from 200 to 400 calories (for a 140-pound individual) per half hour. Thirty minutes of boxing in a ring torches 400 calories; 30 minutes of punching a bag vaporizes 200 calories.
And now we’re getting to the point, Do You Rumble?
What Is Rumble Boxing?
Rumble is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), strength training, metabolic conditioning (METCON), and uppercut throwing cardio all combined in one clean class.
Rumble was founded by entrepreneur Andy Stenzler, who co-founded Cosi and Kidville; Eugene Remm, a nightclub guru, restaurateur and Rumble’s chief brand officer; Noah Neiman, former Barry’s Bootcamp master trainer and a Bravo “Work Out New York” star; and Anthony DiMarco, an 11-time Ironman competitor and former managing director at Google. It’s been said that Rumble is the ‘next big thing’ and that they are uniquely positioned to help shepherd and expedite its growth.
Rumble’s workouts are built around a 45-minute full-body strength-training and conditioning class that features teardrop-shaped, water-filled punching bags (designed not to hurt wrists or other joints), and moves to floor workouts with weights before going back to the punching bags — with inspiring hip-hop and house music mixed with “classics” from Biggie Smalls to the Fugees.
We Tried It: The Rumble Boxing Workout Kendall Jenner, David Beckham and Selena Gomez Love
This class is a challenge from start to finish! We were dripping in sweat and our muscles were on fire, but the beauty of it is that you can go at your own pace. And NO prior boxing experience needed!
Once you check in and get your glossy custom white gloves and wraps, you head inside the dimly lit room to warm up and start throwing punches. Coach Shield, who studied in US and speaks fluent English, will guide you through every step.
We love the darkness for two reasons: 1. You get in there and get in the zone. No one cares about what the person next to them is doing, even if it’s Selena Gomez… it’s all about putting in the work without having to think about what you look like. 2. The lighting system is timed perfectly with the music so you feel like you’re dancing at LIV Miami. When that red light hits you, it’s hard not to turn it up.
And then, of course, there’s the reputation of Rumble Boxing itself. It’s known for attracting celebrities (Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, David Beckham, and — based on Rumble’s Instagram — an absurd number of models) in New York and Los Angeles. Now, we’re getting a taste of that celebrity-endorsed life with our own Rumble Boxing Hardcore Man Boxing studio in Hangzhou.
We swung by for a class on opening day to see if it would live up to the hype, and it didn’t disappoint. Hardcore Man Boxing is located on the 3rd floor of Gemini Mansion in Binjiang. Once you arrive, you’ll see the night club styled studio in black and red.
The studio itself is outfitted with intense sound systems, screens, and lighting (we’re talking black lights, which add some serious dramatic effects) that make the workout experience fully immersive. The water-filled punching bags are from AQUABAG, it costs 3,000RMB each, and there are 37 of them.
There is also a dedicated heart rate meter to record the calories that you’ve burned. The calories burned per lesson will be uploaded directly to the big screen so you can see how much fat you’ve lost in one class.
The locker rooms — slick, pristine white spaces — have all the amenities you’ll need to freshen up after class, including shower gel, shampoo, cotton pads, and even Dyson hairdryers.
After the class, you can enjoy a healthy meal at the reception that has less than 300 calories and costs 30RMB.
We were promised a high-end boutique studio, and that’s exactly what we got.
As for the workout itself, it’s honestly the most beginner-friendly of all the new boxing workouts. The class is 45 mins and the courses are divided into different training intensities (low, medium, and high), from warming up, to weights, to boxing training. The whole studio is filled with hanging aqua bags. Rumble’s teardrop-shaped, water-filled punching bags AQUABAG takes the place of traditional heavy bags.
Overall, the class is a high-energy, upbeat, music-fueled, sweaty good time. (Oh, and you will be sore. Three days later and our abs are still feeling it.)
After experiencing Rumble myself, now I know why the members and trainers look as great as they do. It was an amazing workout with entertaining trainers and an all around awesome time. Rumble: Celebrity tested, MORE Hangzhou Approved.
Now MORE Hangzhou has the opportunity to invite you all to come to have a drop-in at 3pm on Sunday, Nov. 17th for only 68RMB (cost 298RMB on sale), it’s definitely on the higher end of the range for a workout class, but hey, it’s boutique fitness — we never said it would be cheap. Ready to punch and kick?
Pre-sale price: 68RMB
(the registration closes at 5pm on Friday, Nov.15th)
