Caring for Your Skin During the Winter Season

Your skin is the largest organ that you have in your body and it is one that has multiple uses. It not only covers and protects everything inside your body, but it also helps your body stay at just the right temperature and allows you to have the sense of touch. Your skin, however, is often the one organ that we do not look after-especially during this time of year.

The winter and spring are particularly vulnerable seasons for your skin. The winter in particular can play a huge role in the way your skin reacts. This is especially the case in the northern parts of China where the weather is harsh, cold, dry, and dusty. People with sensitive or dry skin are particularly prone to problems during the winter season.

A common condition during the winter season and one that we treat often is dry, itchy skin. If you are suffering from this condition it is often easily treated, but remember to see your dermatologist or doctor straight away to be properly diagnosed.

By following the tips below, you will be able to beat dry itchy skin before it even starts this winter.

Tips to help you get your skin through the winter season

Do not take more than one shower/bath a day
Over washing removes the natural lubricant that skin produces and makes skin dry and flaky.

Do not shower/bathe for more than 10 minutes
The longer you stay in the water, the drier your skin will get.

Do not shower/bathe in hot water
Heat increases the rate that water evaporates from your skin leaving it dry. Luke warm water is a better choice.

Avoid saunas and steam baths
Like hot showers, they increase the rate that water evaporates from your skin leaving it dry.

Use a mild formula soap or shower gel and don't exfoliate

Apply moisturizing cream right after you shower/bathe while your skin is still damp

Moisturizers lock water into your skin but do not help add water so the best time to apply them is straight after your body has been in contact with water. For very dry weather, a thin moisturizer that is applied after a shower is not enough; in this circumstance, some thicker and greasier creams will do a better job.

Avoid wearing nylon or woolen clothing because these materials can irritate your skin
Loose fitting undergarments made out of 100% cotton are best when your skin is dry.

Air-conditioners, over-heated rooms, and windy weather all make the environment dry, which in turn can make your skin dry
To combat this, put some plants, fish-tanks, or humidifiers in your office and home.

Apply some extra protection if you have to go out on a windy day

The sun is not as hot or bright in winter

however, if you are outdoors for long periods of time, your skin can still get sunburned, particularly in the snow
Be sure to apply sunscreen in these cases.

Avoid spicy food as it can make your skin dry and itchy

Drink lots of water and limit your intake of alcohol

Wellington College International Hangzhou is pleased to announce the opening of admissions for their first ever cohort of Year 10 students to take the IGCSEs in the 2020-2021 academic year.

What are the IGCSEs?

IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education, which is a globally recognised qualification taken in Years 10 and 11 (Grades 9 and 10) and carries the same weight as the GCSEs that are offered within the UK. The IGCSE is one of the most sought after and recognised qualifications in the world, because it helps students develop core skills and competencies, including investigative skills, problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking. These skills are highly sought after by universities around the world, and as such, students who have completed the IGCSEs are generally regarded as highly competent candidates to enter such universities.

IGCSEs are also the most popular international qualification in schools around the world, with more than 4,800 schools over 150 countries doing the Cambridge International Examinations version of the IGCSE alone. Enrolling your child in the IGCSE programme at Wellington will provide them with a vital boost to their academic career, which will not only help them build on their study skills, but will make them more competitive and prepared to enter their senior school programme, whether that is offering A Levels or the IB Diploma Programme.

For the 2020-2021 academic year, Wellington College International Hangzhou is accepting an extremely limited number of applicants into Year 10 and is seeking students who will be able to achieve the world-standard results expected of them at Wellington.

In reflection of the importance of this first cohort, Wellington College International Hangzhou is proud to announce a range of scholarships, including an academic scholarship for Year 10 that includes significant reductions in tuition fees for the duration of the two-year IGCSE programme, with the option for this to be extended throughout the two-year A Level programme, subject to a favourable academic assessment.

This is an exciting opportunity for talented students in Hangzhou to receive a significant tuition reduction, allowing access to the world-class holistic education which Wellington has to offer.

As well as meeting the admissions requirements for Wellington College International Hangzhou, and being able to demonstrate significant academic potential as determined through the admissions assessment process, other traits that Wellington College International Hangzhou seeking from their Wellingtonian pupils include;

An international outlook and a desire to be a global citizen of the future

A willingness to work hard with a positive attitude towards learning

A desire to develop all Wellington Identities, to take full advantage of the opportunities on offer at Wellington and show a commitment to making a positive contribution to the wider Wellington community

An aspiration to live by the Wellington Values

To learn more about the IGCSEs and the academic scholarship programme, we encourage prospective parents to join Wellington for their IGCSE Parent Information Sessions being held on Tuesday, December 3rd and Tuesday December 17th.

Do You Rumble?

Don’t have motivation to go workout? Tired of running alone? Bored of lifting all those weights in the gym? And got too many injuries from CrossFit? Here comes boxing to shake up your work-out routine!

Benefits of Boxing

Boxing is a truly fantastic sport and it isn’t just for those giant beasts of men that you see on television. Boxing is a sport that everybody can participate in and that makes a huge difference. Of course, you don’t actually have to step in the ring in the form of competitive boxing. We realize that not everybody wants to fight other people for fun, not to mention that taking a few shots to the noggin can definitely hurt your brain, but you can always box for fun and you can definitely engage in all of the training that comes with it.

There's a reason why boxing is the workout of choice for so many celebs and models. Not only is fighting a strength and cardio workout in one, it's the best way to get in tune with your inner badass.

The boxing workout is great for fat loss. Almost every boxing exercise will make you sweat. No matter if you're doing heavy bag work, mitt work, jumping rope, sparring, push-ups or even shadowboxing, you're going to burn calories. You can lose 3-4 pounds in a single workout if it's intense enough. The main physical benefit beginner boxers will see is cardiovascular since boxing improves your resting heart rate and muscular endurance. That lowered resting heart rate and increased stamina can give you an edge in your other workouts.

With a potential burn rate of 13 calories a minute, boxing goes head-to-head with other types of cardio like running and cycling. Plan to punch away anywhere from 200 to 400 calories (for a 140-pound individual) per half hour. Thirty minutes of boxing in a ring torches 400 calories; 30 minutes of punching a bag vaporizes 200 calories.

And now we’re getting to the point, Do You Rumble?

What Is Rumble Boxing?

Rumble is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), strength training, metabolic conditioning (METCON), and uppercut throwing cardio all combined in one clean class.

Rumble was founded by entrepreneur Andy Stenzler, who co-founded Cosi and Kidville; Eugene Remm, a nightclub guru, restaurateur and Rumble’s chief brand officer; Noah Neiman, former Barry’s Bootcamp master trainer and a Bravo “Work Out New York” star; and Anthony DiMarco, an 11-time Ironman competitor and former managing director at Google. It’s been said that Rumble is the ‘next big thing’ and that they are uniquely positioned to help shepherd and expedite its growth.

Rumble’s workouts are built around a 45-minute full-body strength-training and conditioning class that features teardrop-shaped, water-filled punching bags (designed not to hurt wrists or other joints), and moves to floor workouts with weights before going back to the punching bags — with inspiring hip-hop and house music mixed with “classics” from Biggie Smalls to the Fugees.

We Tried It: The Rumble Boxing Workout Kendall Jenner, David Beckham and Selena Gomez Love

This class is a challenge from start to finish! We were dripping in sweat and our muscles were on fire, but the beauty of it is that you can go at your own pace. And NO prior boxing experience needed!

Once you check in and get your glossy custom white gloves and wraps, you head inside the dimly lit room to warm up and start throwing punches. Coach Shield, who studied in US and speaks fluent English, will guide you through every step.

We love the darkness for two reasons: 1. You get in there and get in the zone. No one cares about what the person next to them is doing, even if it’s Selena Gomez… it’s all about putting in the work without having to think about what you look like. 2. The lighting system is timed perfectly with the music so you feel like you’re dancing at LIV Miami. When that red light hits you, it’s hard not to turn it up.

And then, of course, there’s the reputation of Rumble Boxing itself. It’s known for attracting celebrities (Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, David Beckham, and — based on Rumble’s Instagram — an absurd number of models) in New York and Los Angeles. Now, we’re getting a taste of that celebrity-endorsed life with our own Rumble Boxing Hardcore Man Boxing studio in Hangzhou.

We swung by for a class on opening day to see if it would live up to the hype, and it didn’t disappoint. Hardcore Man Boxing is located on the 3rd floor of Gemini Mansion in Binjiang. Once you arrive, you’ll see the night club styled studio in black and red.

The studio itself is outfitted with intense sound systems, screens, and lighting (we’re talking black lights, which add some serious dramatic effects) that make the workout experience fully immersive. The water-filled punching bags are from AQUABAG, it costs 3,000RMB each, and there are 37 of them.

There is also a dedicated heart rate meter to record the calories that you’ve burned. The calories burned per lesson will be uploaded directly to the big screen so you can see how much fat you’ve lost in one class.

The locker rooms — slick, pristine white spaces — have all the amenities you’ll need to freshen up after class, including shower gel, shampoo, cotton pads, and even Dyson hairdryers.

After the class, you can enjoy a healthy meal at the reception that has less than 300 calories and costs 30RMB.

We were promised a high-end boutique studio, and that’s exactly what we got.

As for the workout itself, it’s honestly the most beginner-friendly of all the new boxing workouts. The class is 45 mins and the courses are divided into different training intensities (low, medium, and high), from warming up, to weights, to boxing training. The whole studio is filled with hanging aqua bags. Rumble’s teardrop-shaped, water-filled punching bags AQUABAG takes the place of traditional heavy bags.

Overall, the class is a high-energy, upbeat, music-fueled, sweaty good time. (Oh, and you will be sore. Three days later and our abs are still feeling it.)

After experiencing Rumble myself, now I know why the members and trainers look as great as they do. It was an amazing workout with entertaining trainers and an all around awesome time. Rumble: Celebrity tested, MORE Hangzhou Approved.

Now MORE Hangzhou has the opportunity to invite you all to come to have a drop-in at 3pm on Sunday, Nov. 17th for only 68RMB (cost 298RMB on sale), it’s definitely on the higher end of the range for a workout class, but hey, it’s boutique fitness — we never said it would be cheap. Ready to punch and kick?

Pre-sale price: 68RMB
(the registration closes at 5pm on Friday, Nov.15th)
Ticket-at-the-door: 88RMB

From Would-be Toolmaker, to Hotel GM

After years of waiting, Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou, inspired by the journeys of the Grand Canal and the richness of tea, has finally opened! The hotel presents an exclusive lifestyle destination defined by signature restaurants, exceptional spaces, design and gastronomic craftsmanship.

Hailing from Germany, with 32 years of experience in hospitality, Mr. Alex Pichel was recently appointed as the new General Manager at Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou.

Meeting Mr. Alex Pichel

Mr. Pichel welcomed us on the 3rd floor of the hotel. He wore a classic dark navy suit and exuded a dynamic energy. Mr. Pichel’s English accent made a deep impression on us right away. “I love London! I still have great memories thinking back to that time when I was working at the Park Hyatt, which was the beginning of my career.” Mr. Pichel explained, “I went to Argentina, Mexico, France, but in between I always came back to London".

Early Days & Coming Full Circle

Mr. Pichel started his hospitality career very early, working for the Hyatt Group from 1993. The following 7 years, he worked in almost in every position, from bellboy to engineer, from human resources to kitchen, from sales to revenue, from IT to marketing communications, he’s done them all. When he was 32 years old, he became the Deputy General Manager at Hyatt Regency Mainz, which was one of the youngest age for a GM at that time. “I do think it’s important for me to know a little bit about everything, it’s easier for me to run the hotel.”

This time he chose Kempinski and it wasn’t the first time he has worked for that company. As he said, “the loop changes and the loop actually closes.” He started working for Kempinski Berlin from 1988-1992, and 5 years ago he joined Kempinski again, taking his career to Asia for the first time to work at Kempinski Jakarta and Bangkok. “Kempinski is a company with more than 120 years of tradition, it’s the oldest European luxury company in the world,” he continued. “With Kempinski, it’s very different, we are proud of who we are, of our history coming from Berthold Kempinski (the hotel founder) originally, that’s something I enjoy, working for a company that is more compact, and enjoying its quality. It’s defined by the luxury that we really stand for.”

Our Lunch Chitchat

Mr. Pichel invited us to join him for lunch at Zi Chen Chinese Restaurant at the hotel. Zi Chen serves authentic Hangzhou cuisine and Cantonese seasonal favourites in a setting that evokes the grandeur of Chinese heritage. He told us that he had only arrived three weeks ago, but he had been too busy to enjoy the beautiful nature of Hangzhou. Only a few days ago, he visited Xixi Wetlands, the West Lake and the tea village with his team to enjoy the local food and desserts.

We talked about how Mr. Pichel entered the hospitality industry while we enjoyed the delicious food and Pu’er tea at Zi Chen. Mr. Pichel’s impression about China came from his father who was a journalist that traveled around the world. His father would always bring back souvenirs for him, one of which was a vinyl record of Chinese and Asian music. He would listen to that record and dream about those faraway lands.

Life is always full of unpredictability, just as he was supposed to follow in his uncle’s footsteps to be a toolmaker, he did his internship in a small hotel and accidentally discovered what he wants to do for the rest of his life. At the age of 17, he started working as a bellboy. 32 years later, he still loves this industry as much as when he first started.

Today, when we have so many hotels in town, every hotel is looking at the outlets and what they present, but Mr. Pichel thinks it is actually the people and the quality of the service that is the most important, something that is always talked about but has not been very well delivered. Quality is something very close to his heart, he does believe the quality of service, food, and presentation is something that would make a hotel stand out.

At this point, we can see Kempinski does have some unique geographic and environmental advantages. The All-day-dining has stunning high ceilings and huge outdoor gardens, the upcoming bar has an amazing interior design, an outstanding outdoor rooftop and the best view of the canal. Not to mention, Kempinski is the only 5 star hotel in the north part of the town, together with the large shopping mall, residential and office complex, museum, and numerous historical blocks along the Grand Canal, this area has a lot to offer.

What More to Expect at Kempinski Hangzhou

Mr. Pichel told us that if all goes well, Morph Rooftop Bar will have a soft opening in a week or two. MORE was fortunate enough to see the bar taking shape a while ago. We had a private preview tour and we can assure you that Morph might well be the most desirable bar in town. The bar was designed by famous award winner Ashley Sutton, known for many nightlife destinations in Hong Kong and Bangkok, and whose designs are very distinct and recognizable. Morph is his first and flagship project in mainland China.

Frieda German restaurant will open in the first week of December. Its dining experience will set new standards for German cuisine in Hangzhou and it is a continuation of the culinary revolution initiated by Berthold Kempinski. Kempinski’s Frieda Restaurant celebrates its gastronomical origins by paying homage to a very important figure in their history: Frieda Kempinski, the only daughter of Berthold and Helene.

The Berthold Delikatessen is a quality Deli and European-style café. It is located on Floor 1 and connected to Frieda German Restaurant. The Berthold Deli offers a diverse selection of own-brand products, from gifts to freshly made snacks, including packaged goods like ground coffees, seasonal favourites, local specialties, confectionery and preserves.

MORE ended the Kempinski trip by having a quick hotel tour with Mr. Pichel. Besides Morph, Frieda and the Berthold Deli, we also visited the spa and the gym. We must say that we are really looking forward to seeing the full opening of the hotel. As Mr. Pichel said, it is defined by quality and luxury. We are sure Kempinski will bring the people living in Hangzhou a new style of life.
