The last few weeks have been extremely busy and exciting at Wellington College International Hangzhou. Below is a recap of some of the activities that have been happening around school.
Maths Week: “Maths is Everywhere!”
"When will I ever use this?" is a question maths teachers often hear from their pupils, and over the past week, Wellington College International Hangzhou set about to answer that exact question by celebrating Maths Week from October 21st to 25th.
In every lesson last week, pupils applied their maths knowledge and skills to their different subjects. Pupils learned how maths in dancing was important; they counted steps to keep in time and used their geometry skills to make dancing more interesting. In science, children made lava lamps and looked at portion sizes to make the most effective lamps. The children in Year 2 experienced coding and how numbers are used all the time in ICT. Year 5 pupils used their maths knowledge to build bridges and Year 3 pupils used their measuring skills to bake banana muffins. In art, the pupils looked at creating shapes with strings and making patterns. In PE they were measuring distance and estimating time. It was also so wonderful to see the children work together across year groups and really collaborate together to learn and to experience new things.
'Maths is Everywhere' provided an invaluable opportunity to discover maths beyond the curriculum and explore how often pupils use maths both in and beyond the different subjects pupil study in school. It also allowed teachers to highlight the importance of a growth mindset in their pupils. STEAMing Ahead – Imagining Education
Like Never Before
Wellington College International Hangzhou aspires to provide their children with the skills, knowledge and values to be able to thrive in the 21st century. While they are proud of their heritage and traditions, their educational philosophy is firmly looking towards the future. An integral part of being able to operate successfully in the 21st century is having a deep understanding of new technologies, as these will pave the way for the industries of the future. At all levels, Wellington College International Hangzhou integrate STEAM into their curricula, allowing their pupils to turn theoretical knowledge into practical application.
On 28th October, Wellington College Hangzhou hosted a STEAM Demo Day organized by the China-Britain Business Council, which wrapped up the five-day International Digital Education Conference in Hangzhou. Six leading UK STEAM companies including Discovery Education, Games Workshop, MEL science and more held a workshops where pupils, teachers, parents had an opportunity to learn how STEAM can be integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning.
At Wellington, the College understands that the world is changing quickly. In essence, the College needs to prepare their students not only with knowledge and skills for today, but for jobs that don’t even exist yet. STEAM is a critical component in this. Wellington College International Hangzhou aims to expose their pupils to as many new technologies as possible throughout their time at the College, allowing them to become technologically literate, but with a purpose. At a time when technology dominates their lives, they must provide their pupils with the skills needed to use technology responsibly. Perhaps in the future, they will be the drivers of change, up-ending existing industries and making the world a cleaner, safer, more efficient place.
Parents and the community are essential at Wellington. Starting from this academic year, Coffee Mornings have been held every two weeks to boost the communication between school and parents. Led by Ms. Kathryn Richardson, the principal of Wellington College International Hangzhou, together with the academic team, this is a great opportunity for parents to talk with the principal about the school curriculum and the vision for the school.
Besides the Coffee Mornings, there are various kind of parent workshops about the curriculum and subjects held regularly which give a clear picture about ‘what we learn and how we teach’ at Wellington College International Hangzhou to our existing parents. For example, on October 22nd, the performing arts team explained the music and drama curriculum including what level pupils should achieve in each year and how parents can support at home. On October 29th, the head of ICT delivered a workshop explaining how they teach programming and coding skills to pupils from a young age.
The Wellington College International Hangzhou campus is a hub of activity not only for existing families, but for the entire Hangzhou community. On October 22nd, Wellington College International Hangzhou and United Family Hangzhou Clinic presented a first aid training for parents within the Hangzhou community. First aid training can provide many benefits, and can help parents rest assured that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to help their children in an emergency. Through the training, parents learnt about the First aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, environmental emergencies and CPR Demonstration. The next Parent First Aid Training session will be held on November 19th. Get in touch with Wellington or United Family Hangzhou Clinic to learn more and register.

Your skin is the largest organ that you have in your body and it is one that has multiple uses. It not only covers and protects everything inside your body, but it also helps your body stay at just the right temperature and allows you to have the sense of touch. Your skin, however, is often the one organ that we do not look after-especially during this time of year.
The winter and spring are particularly vulnerable seasons for your skin. The winter in particular can play a huge role in the way your skin reacts. This is especially the case in the northern parts of China where the weather is harsh, cold, dry, and dusty. People with sensitive or dry skin are particularly prone to problems during the winter season.
A common condition during the winter season and one that we treat often is dry, itchy skin. If you are suffering from this condition it is often easily treated, but remember to see your dermatologist or doctor straight away to be properly diagnosed.
By following the tips below, you will be able to beat dry itchy skin before it even starts this winter.
Tips to help you get your skin through the winter season
Do not take more than one shower/bath a day
Over washing removes the natural lubricant that skin produces and makes skin dry and flaky.
Do not shower/bathe for more than 10 minutes
The longer you stay in the water, the drier your skin will get.
Do not shower/bathe in hot water
Heat increases the rate that water evaporates from your skin leaving it dry. Luke warm water is a better choice.
Avoid saunas and steam baths
Like hot showers, they increase the rate that water evaporates from your skin leaving it dry.
Use a mild formula soap or shower gel and don't exfoliate
Apply moisturizing cream right after you shower/bathe while your skin is still damp
Moisturizers lock water into your skin but do not help add water so the best time to apply them is straight after your body has been in contact with water. For very dry weather, a thin moisturizer that is applied after a shower is not enough; in this circumstance, some thicker and greasier creams will do a better job.
Avoid wearing nylon or woolen clothing because these materials can irritate your skin
Loose fitting undergarments made out of 100% cotton are best when your skin is dry.
Air-conditioners, over-heated rooms, and windy weather all make the environment dry, which in turn can make your skin dry
To combat this, put some plants, fish-tanks, or humidifiers in your office and home.
Apply some extra protection if you have to go out on a windy day
The sun is not as hot or bright in winter
however, if you are outdoors for long periods of time, your skin can still get sunburned, particularly in the snow
Be sure to apply sunscreen in these cases.
Avoid spicy food as it can make your skin dry and itchy
Drink lots of water and limit your intake of alcohol

Wellington College International Hangzhou is pleased to announce the opening of admissions for their first ever cohort of Year 10 students to take the IGCSEs in the 2020-2021 academic year.
What are the IGCSEs?
IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education, which is a globally recognised qualification taken in Years 10 and 11 (Grades 9 and 10) and carries the same weight as the GCSEs that are offered within the UK. The IGCSE is one of the most sought after and recognised qualifications in the world, because it helps students develop core skills and competencies, including investigative skills, problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking. These skills are highly sought after by universities around the world, and as such, students who have completed the IGCSEs are generally regarded as highly competent candidates to enter such universities.
IGCSEs are also the most popular international qualification in schools around the world, with more than 4,800 schools over 150 countries doing the Cambridge International Examinations version of the IGCSE alone. Enrolling your child in the IGCSE programme at Wellington will provide them with a vital boost to their academic career, which will not only help them build on their study skills, but will make them more competitive and prepared to enter their senior school programme, whether that is offering A Levels or the IB Diploma Programme.
For the 2020-2021 academic year, Wellington College International Hangzhou is accepting an extremely limited number of applicants into Year 10 and is seeking students who will be able to achieve the world-standard results expected of them at Wellington.
In reflection of the importance of this first cohort, Wellington College International Hangzhou is proud to announce a range of scholarships, including an academic scholarship for Year 10 that includes significant reductions in tuition fees for the duration of the two-year IGCSE programme, with the option for this to be extended throughout the two-year A Level programme, subject to a favourable academic assessment.
This is an exciting opportunity for talented students in Hangzhou to receive a significant tuition reduction, allowing access to the world-class holistic education which Wellington has to offer.
As well as meeting the admissions requirements for Wellington College International Hangzhou, and being able to demonstrate significant academic potential as determined through the admissions assessment process, other traits that Wellington College International Hangzhou seeking from their Wellingtonian pupils include;

Don’t have motivation to go workout? Tired of running alone? Bored of lifting all those weights in the gym? And got too many injuries from CrossFit? Here comes boxing to shake up your work-out routine!
Benefits of Boxing
Boxing is a truly fantastic sport and it isn’t just for those giant beasts of men that you see on television. Boxing is a sport that everybody can participate in and that makes a huge difference. Of course, you don’t actually have to step in the ring in the form of competitive boxing. We realize that not everybody wants to fight other people for fun, not to mention that taking a few shots to the noggin can definitely hurt your brain, but you can always box for fun and you can definitely engage in all of the training that comes with it.
There's a reason why boxing is the workout of choice for so many celebs and models. Not only is fighting a strength and cardio workout in one, it's the best way to get in tune with your inner badass.
The boxing workout is great for fat loss. Almost every boxing exercise will make you sweat. No matter if you're doing heavy bag work, mitt work, jumping rope, sparring, push-ups or even shadowboxing, you're going to burn calories. You can lose 3-4 pounds in a single workout if it's intense enough. The main physical benefit beginner boxers will see is cardiovascular since boxing improves your resting heart rate and muscular endurance. That lowered resting heart rate and increased stamina can give you an edge in your other workouts.
With a potential burn rate of 13 calories a minute, boxing goes head-to-head with other types of cardio like running and cycling. Plan to punch away anywhere from 200 to 400 calories (for a 140-pound individual) per half hour. Thirty minutes of boxing in a ring torches 400 calories; 30 minutes of punching a bag vaporizes 200 calories.
And now we’re getting to the point, Do You Rumble?
What Is Rumble Boxing?
Rumble is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), strength training, metabolic conditioning (METCON), and uppercut throwing cardio all combined in one clean class.
Rumble was founded by entrepreneur Andy Stenzler, who co-founded Cosi and Kidville; Eugene Remm, a nightclub guru, restaurateur and Rumble’s chief brand officer; Noah Neiman, former Barry’s Bootcamp master trainer and a Bravo “Work Out New York” star; and Anthony DiMarco, an 11-time Ironman competitor and former managing director at Google. It’s been said that Rumble is the ‘next big thing’ and that they are uniquely positioned to help shepherd and expedite its growth.
Rumble’s workouts are built around a 45-minute full-body strength-training and conditioning class that features teardrop-shaped, water-filled punching bags (designed not to hurt wrists or other joints), and moves to floor workouts with weights before going back to the punching bags — with inspiring hip-hop and house music mixed with “classics” from Biggie Smalls to the Fugees.
We Tried It: The Rumble Boxing Workout Kendall Jenner, David Beckham and Selena Gomez Love
This class is a challenge from start to finish! We were dripping in sweat and our muscles were on fire, but the beauty of it is that you can go at your own pace. And NO prior boxing experience needed!
Once you check in and get your glossy custom white gloves and wraps, you head inside the dimly lit room to warm up and start throwing punches. Coach Shield, who studied in US and speaks fluent English, will guide you through every step.
We love the darkness for two reasons: 1. You get in there and get in the zone. No one cares about what the person next to them is doing, even if it’s Selena Gomez… it’s all about putting in the work without having to think about what you look like. 2. The lighting system is timed perfectly with the music so you feel like you’re dancing at LIV Miami. When that red light hits you, it’s hard not to turn it up.
And then, of course, there’s the reputation of Rumble Boxing itself. It’s known for attracting celebrities (Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, David Beckham, and — based on Rumble’s Instagram — an absurd number of models) in New York and Los Angeles. Now, we’re getting a taste of that celebrity-endorsed life with our own Rumble Boxing Hardcore Man Boxing studio in Hangzhou.
We swung by for a class on opening day to see if it would live up to the hype, and it didn’t disappoint. Hardcore Man Boxing is located on the 3rd floor of Gemini Mansion in Binjiang. Once you arrive, you’ll see the night club styled studio in black and red.
The studio itself is outfitted with intense sound systems, screens, and lighting (we’re talking black lights, which add some serious dramatic effects) that make the workout experience fully immersive. The water-filled punching bags are from AQUABAG, it costs 3,000RMB each, and there are 37 of them.
There is also a dedicated heart rate meter to record the calories that you’ve burned. The calories burned per lesson will be uploaded directly to the big screen so you can see how much fat you’ve lost in one class.
The locker rooms — slick, pristine white spaces — have all the amenities you’ll need to freshen up after class, including shower gel, shampoo, cotton pads, and even Dyson hairdryers.
After the class, you can enjoy a healthy meal at the reception that has less than 300 calories and costs 30RMB.
We were promised a high-end boutique studio, and that’s exactly what we got.
As for the workout itself, it’s honestly the most beginner-friendly of all the new boxing workouts. The class is 45 mins and the courses are divided into different training intensities (low, medium, and high), from warming up, to weights, to boxing training. The whole studio is filled with hanging aqua bags. Rumble’s teardrop-shaped, water-filled punching bags AQUABAG takes the place of traditional heavy bags.
Overall, the class is a high-energy, upbeat, music-fueled, sweaty good time. (Oh, and you will be sore. Three days later and our abs are still feeling it.)
After experiencing Rumble myself, now I know why the members and trainers look as great as they do. It was an amazing workout with entertaining trainers and an all around awesome time. Rumble: Celebrity tested, MORE Hangzhou Approved.
Now MORE Hangzhou has the opportunity to invite you all to come to have a drop-in at 3pm on Sunday, Nov. 17th for only 68RMB (cost 298RMB on sale), it’s definitely on the higher end of the range for a workout class, but hey, it’s boutique fitness — we never said it would be cheap. Ready to punch and kick?
Pre-sale price: 68RMB
(the registration closes at 5pm on Friday, Nov.15th)
