It’s an art that the Japanese seem to have mastered. Look to their big cities like Toyko and Osaka and you’ll see modern masterpieces, and yet simultaneously, their restaurant venues remain cozy and distinct. Hot Iron, located in MIXC mall, also seems to have mastered this art.
The restaurant’s industrial décor – with its crisp, clean lines and its stainless steel hood fans – is playfully contrasted by anime cartoons playing on every flatscreen television. Those with a keen eye for photography will notice a photograph by Robert Capa hanging on the wall, taken during the Chinese resistance to Japan’s invasion. Whether you choose to sit on one of the large cushions, Japanese style, or in a booth, your dining experience is sure to be unique and comfy, a welcome change of pace to streetshaokao (which I frequent far more often than I care to admit).
As its name suggests, Hot Iron is a barbeque restaurant. The menus have an extensive selection of beef, pork, chicken and seafood, explained in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese – a delight for any true carnivore, regardless of where you come from. The manager was very helpful in making suggestions (in English) and showing us how to use the grill at our table. One of her recommendations was the Australian ‘Red Raw’ Beef Platter (78RMB), which is served with the restaurant’s special sauce. The meat itself was tender and thick, and the sauce gave it a nice tangy and subtle fruity flavor. After the platter, we decided to delve into a good portion of the menu, sampling the Minced Garlic Pork Spare Ribs (48RMB), Australian Gold Wagu Steak (168RMB) Mackerel Pike (38RMB), and Roasted Belly of Beef (48RMB), which all came neatly presented raw. The quality and price of the meats differ based on whether you are ordering from the Wagu Beef or Standard Meat section of the menu. The standard meat is good and flavorful too, as any meat with sauce can be, but if you’re coming to Hot Iron, you should indulge in the far more succulent Wagu selections.
Herbivores need not worry too much; the menu includes vegetables, salads, rice and desserts like the Egg Custard Pudding (12RMB) that you can munch on while your friends enjoy the real treat, meat!
Hot Iron is located on the fifth floor of MIXC mall on Fuchun Road. Underground parking is available. No smoking.
