It is not often that a new Chinese Restaurant truly impresses me. However, I have been to Xibei three times in the two short weeks since discovering it. It would be easy to miss this restaurant on the fourth floor restaurant row, but it is worth finding. They specialize in succulent lamb, oat noodles, and hearty meals to get you through the upcoming winter. As a healthy bonus, Xibei never adds MSG to their food, and uses very little salt, a fact the staff proudly points out after you place your order.
It was fortunate the MORE team arrived hungrier than usual, because we had our work cut out for us. We started with a few excellent oat noodle dishes, Vegetable Braised Noodles 26RMB and Steamed Oat Dumplings 12RMB. Heading further down the carbohydrate highway, we sampled the Coarse Cereal Bread basket 16RMB/23RMB, featuring six different freshly baked breads. Another great appetizer is the roujiamo, or Steamed Bread with Minced Pork, 6RMB each.
That could have made a satisfying meal right there, but soon the big guns showed up. The Fried Lamb Slices with Cumin 49RMB came with lean, tender and juicy meat. If on-the-bone is more your style, go with the Lamb Chops with Cumin 69RMB, or a Roasted Lamb Shank 7RMB/100g (roughly 25RMB each). Besides an impressive array of lamb, they also have some great beef dishes. Try the Braised Beef with Potatoes and Bok Choy 39RMB or either of their Slow-cooked Stewed Beef dishes.
They also have a good selection of sautéed vegetable dishes, and something called the Abundant Harvest 19RMB, which is a plate of fresh steamed vegetables like carrots, green beans, pumpkin, and corn. For dessert, be sure to try the fresh yogurt with honey 9RMB and wash everything down with a glass of the sweet and tart Buckthorn Juice 19RMB, or a cool pitcher of Xinjiang Dried Fruit Tea 19RMB.
